1. Stonehenge, Ibiza style
Not many people know that Ibiza has its own version of Stonehenge – a contemporary monument carved by Andrew Rogers that sits atop a rocky coastal shelf. This intriguing piece of art is built up of 13 basalt columns stacked together, standing at a whopping 10 metres high. Overlooking the island’s scenic coastline, it’s a great vantage point for watching the sensational sunsets. If you look far enough, you can catch a glimpse of the Es Vedra Islands on the horizon.
2. Hop over to Formentera
The smallest of the Balearics, this magical island shouldn’t be overlooked and makes for a fantastic day trip. Renowned for its powdery-white sands and glistening crystal-clear waters, it would be easy to think you’d taken a trip to the Caribbean! This white-washed island has tonnes to see, from striking lighthouses to lush nature reserves and a colourful coral reef. Head underwater on a snorkelling trip or hop on a boat tour to discover little sandy nooks.
3. Sunbathe at Talamanca Beach
Talamanca Beach is the closest to Ibiza Town, boasting gorgeous turquoise waters and snow-white sands framed by a mix of urban and natural landscapes. Recharge your batteries under the sunshine or get some adrenaline pumping with some water sports. Don’t miss the beloved Fish Shack restaurant, serving up sumptuous seafood dishes all day long.
4. Ibiza Old Town
Known to locals as Dalt Vila, this UNESCO World Heritage Site offers a fascinating insight into the island’s rich history. Wandering through the narrow, cobbled streets, the architecture tells the story of days gone by. Reigning over the town is a 14th-century Gothic-style cathedral, with a lookout point at the top over the historical cityscape. Ibiza castle is sure to impress, fortified with crumbling medieval stone walls. To get up close to fascinating artefacts or celebrate the work of modern Ibizan artists, there’s a collection of art galleries and museums to delve into.
5. Bird watch at the Ibiza Salt Flats
Although the salt flats might not be at the top of your initial itinerary, they are truly a sight to behold as they glisten under the sunlight when it hits the magically pink-hued waters. Drive a few minutes down the dirt track and to reach the two-storey tall salt mountain, which looks remarkable in the sunlight. Keep your eyes peeled for flamingos at the end of summer, as they use the thick marshes as a layover hub.
6. Explore the Caves
One for the inquisitive explorers, Can Marco Caves are a natural beauty hotspot nestled in the north of the island. Inside, follow the same route that smugglers once took to bring their contraband to the island. Once inside, admire centuries-in-the-making rock formations at every turn, made up of stalagmites and stalactites that reflect the seeping natural light. At the centre of the festival is a remarkable music and light show, adding to the thrill of wondering through this spectacular underground phenomenon.
7. Dive into Ibizan wines
It wouldn’t be a holiday without a tipple or two, and Ibiza’s climate makes for some great grape-growing weather. There are verdant vineyards peppered across the Northwest, with many wineries offering wine-tasting tours. Delve into the wine scene and taste earthy reds and sweet whites, paired with some tempting tapas plates. You’ll learn everything there is to know about wine-making, along with the island’s fascinating history.
8. Shop at the famous Hippy Markets
Exuding a bohemian vibe, you’ll find a handful of hippie markets sprinkled across the island. Local artisans flock here to sell their produce and crafts, and you could spend whole afternoons browsing their colourful stalls. From handmade clothes, jangling bracelets to funky artwork, you’ll be heading back to your villa with your bags full. Even if you’re not into browsing, the atmosphere is energetic with live music bars and themed restaurants.
9. Visit Atlantis
Well, maybe not the real Atlantis, but the island does have its own version of the famous Lost City. Centuries ago, the area was quarried to make watchtowers for Ibiza Castle. What was left is a labyrinth of caves, sea pools, and rock holes named Atlantis by hippies who came to the island in the 1960s. It’s a steep hike down to the old quarry, but once you make your way to the water, the views reach out across the coastline.
10. Hike to the top of Sa Talaia
Stretch your legs and get some fresh air with a hike to the tallest point in Ibiza, called Sa Talaia, located in Sant Josep. The short walk is easy and straightforward, keep your eyes peeled for the exotic ferret-like native Jineta, which may be lounging in the trees. Once you reach the top, you’ll be rewarded by phenomenal 360-degree panoramas across the whole island.
